Service Project

The PHS Commissioned Officers Foundation and Black Commissioned Officers Advisory Group (BCOAG) are pleased to present a community outreach project in conjunction with the 2011 USPHS Scientific and Training Symposium. The project is designed to bring together USPHS officers from all categories and the New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA) community. This is an outstanding opportunity to reach out to the New Orleans community and, ultimately, contribute to the public health needs of New Orleans. Dates that the service project will be held are Sunday, June 19, from 1 pm - 6 pm (two overlapping three-hour shifts), Thursday, June 23, from 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm, and Friday, June 24, from 8 am - 12 pm.

Online sign up is now closed.  Contact us at info@phscofevents.org before June 17 to volunteer.

Background

The Arthur Monday Multi-Service Community Center, with co-located community service programs, is owned and operated by the City of New Orleans. Located within the Arthur Monday Center is the City Health Department's Ida Hymel Clinic which currently houses primary care and dental health services. In May 2011 primary care will be relocated to another site in the neighborhood; which will enable the City of New Orleans Health Department to expand WIC services and better integrate with other family directed programs.

The WIC program is a vital resource to the community. The Ida Hymel Clinic serves as the only City of New Orleans Health Department facility providing WIC services on the West Bank of Orleans Parish to 1,500 clients a month. The clinic is situated on a public transportation route and can be accessed by foot.

At present, WIC utilizes only three offices within the Ida Hymel clinic and they are packed to capacity with documents and supplies. The City of New Orleans Health Department would like to clean the space, improve the facilities for clients - including painting and developing a children's book library, and transfer immunization records from paper to an electronic record format.

The project would encompass:

  • Moving furniture, supplies and files from existing cramped space into adjacent space
  • Interior wall painting of the clinic and waiting room space
  • Patient waiting area benches with colorful designs
  • Developing a corner children's library space for free books (books already donated)
  • Organizing and transferring paper immunization records into an electronic format

It is important to the City of New Orleans that they provide the community with a facility that is aesthetically pleasing and that is apt to better provide services.
